This is not a post about med school, but rather, about boys school.

My last school is Alam Shah Science School. Its a boys school, and full boarding school. The two years I spent there learning wasn't only for SPM but also, about life and to survive. I like to think that I started to be more independent here. Simply put, it's a memory that I won't forget.

Now, people often ask me about the different environment in boys school. Oftenly, they will come with presumption such as, the students are all hard headed, bullying was everywhere and of course the classic stereotype that all boys school grads have tendency to be gay. Goddammit!

When I explain to them the real situation (the situation at my school that is) they seemed to be cleared from those stereotype. Thank God! But one particular fella (Bunyamin is my victim here, though he isn't the one who I mentioned) got a different interpretation of how its like to be in boys school.

Here's the thing, I meant no disrespect or whatever but I can't help it. As a child I always want to touch things on the shelves of the shop and etc. but that's how I get familiarising myself with the surroundings. It's like looking by touching. SO, naturally I'll poke here and there in the cadaver room, my Yazid doesn't like it one bit. Though I respect his view but due to my stubbornness (and maybe curiosity) he just let it slide. Maybe he is tired of yelling at me all the time. Who knows?

Luckily the cadavers won't break if you touch it. Or else, I have to buy it if I broke it. You know, like "If you broke it, you bought it" policy in shop?

Cadaver: Heart

3rd part of the Cadaver series

The human heart is the size of your fist. It's about 350 grams. If its bigger or heavier than that, you might have an underlying heart problem. The gross anatomy of the human heart is not like what I imagined as a child. You know, the love sign? Its not at all. Actually the love sign is a pagan symbol for buttocks. So, when I see a girl (or sometimes boys) draw the love sign, I was chuckling to myself.

Okay, the cadaver heart didn't snapped off because of me. According the lab tech who was in charge that day, the cadaver heart was already loose because students and lecturers always try to take it out to show the oblique sinus (or whatever it is posterior to the heart).

Second post on the cadaver series

Here's the thing. The cadaver we have is 5 years old at least. So, there will be some organs detached from its original position. The trick is, we need to identify which organ belong to which cadaver since we need to put it back where it came from. The tricky part is, (for me) I'm having a hard time determining which organ is which. You see, the pictures in the textbook looks very different than the real thing. Fortunately, over time, I'm able to recognize the organs. Lucky huh? Wouldn't be silly if a doctor can't identify a human organ.

The fun thing about cadaver session is, we can actually touch all the specimen provided in the room. If you have a strong resistant towards the intoxicating smell of formalin, then by all means, swim with the cadavers all day long. For me, I can't stand the smell. It make my eyes misty. But you can't pamper yourself too much right?

Every med students must did this at least once

Imagining that we're actually operating on patient in an Operation Theater. I did it once and I read most blogs from med student confess on doing the same. It's natural since students, especially pre-clinical students like me, are eager to get that first hand experience to the field. We're like green cadets who is eager to fight in a combat (though often those cadets are most likely to get killed, but let's not get carried away).

I especially enjoy our session with the cadavers.

Collab: Kendrick Ng (Experiment)

I'm Back

This year I started out the updates with 3 consecutive collaboration. I will introduce to you guys a new sidekick of mine, but lets just wait another week for that. mmkay?

This week's collaboration is with Kendrick Ng!! He has agree to be my subject for acute effect of Alcohol. Since I can't drink and it is VERY wrong to slip some booze in Yazid's drinks, I decide to find someone who can drink and Ken, being the Good Guy Greg that he is, volunteered. THX BRO!

So, acute effect of alcohol is mainly involve Central Nervous System (but other system such as Genitourinary, Musculoskeletal, and Cardiovascular is involve as well). We can see the effect of alcohol in different concentration as it is presented with various symptom (usually inhibitory system of CNS) according to different blood alcohol concentration, BAC.

The experiment could not continue since Ken's is passed out and his blood alcohol level if went further, may lead to coma and eventually death by cardiac arrest.

I did this for Problem Based Learning for this block. My sources are Katzung Pharmacology textbook. My colleagues, do read them.

To my non-muslim readers out there, make sure you drink responsibly as alcohol is one of the main cause for fatal road accident. Don't Drink and Drive

The earth is in danger!

No, not 2012 as in the movie and the bogus crap about the ancient Mayans, I'm talking about the real imminent danger of invasion by Malaysian Comic & Doodle Bloggers!

They call themselves as Doom Bringers and as the name suggest, they are bad news....But! Don't worry, the Protectors of Earth is here to fight them.

However, this is a battle that will produce casualties and not to mention the carnage these Doom Bringers brought. So, we (Yazid, Zahir and I) has volunteered our service to the Protectors as a Medic Team. We'll see how that goes later. However, I must say that Zahir and Yazid is quite unenthusiastic as I am. Perhaps, they are annoyed with my comics that always featuring them. Gotta find a new sidekick, gotta find him fast.

Hey folks!

A few months back, Bunyamin (and some other guys, I forgot who, sorry dude) challenged me to keep my beard since I have this ability to grow a beard (not a goatee) in 3 weeks. The only reason I did not keep my beard because it itches. On the other hand, I'm too lazy to shave it every night...sigh, first world problem.

So anyway, I accepted his challenge and keep my beard for few weeks. However it was completely shaved because a kid from this grocery store called me "uncle". Now, I'm usually don't mind the occasional Abang from a person who is clearly older than me, but that lad is like, 3 years younger than me...he even studying SPM Chemistry while keeping his family's shop!

I'm sure the kid from the grocery store meant well.

Sorry for taking a long, unannounced hiatus. One exam piled up upon another and I couldn't stop to take a breath in between. But now, only Minitest Y2B2 is the only exam that I see on the horizon (provided my horizon is short).

Previously, my exam went terrible...or so I thought. But yesterday I received news that I passed my previous exam so, THANK GOD!

Although, this is not my first time passing an exam in med school. The first time I pass was last year in Year 1 Block 2. (Back story is needed here, I failed my Year 1 Block 1 exam). When I saw the result I felt like I'm on top of the world. You can see how I felt like. By the way, this is based on First Time Meme

See? top of the world! But all that excitement died in the day after. Short lived victory is short. My Facebook page is dying. That is all.

P/s: Sorry for missing update for last Wednesday. I came down with a flu. It's the beginning rainy season in Kuantan right now so, I'm expecting that I'm gonna be sick but I didn't expect this early.

No, I never watch the movie.

I remembered this dream like it was last week. No really, it happened last week. It seems to be a pattern for me to dream weird stuff when I'm in exam week. Well, it should be, its how the body told my brain to tell me that I'm stressed/anxious/excited/*insert emotion here*.

Dreams are succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensation that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Dreams are often used by psychiatrist to analyze our mental faculty and activity in order to further understand our emotion. Since ancient times dream are often used as a tool of fortune telling or even weather forecast. However, there are no scientific proof that dream is directly related to future events in the future.

Flatulence

I have one of those at my place. It always made that whoopie cushion sound whenever I sat on it and it always attract attention. I guess there's no harm in exploiting it right?

Come on now, we're all adults here. Farting isn't considered ugly when you learnt its importance. It shows that you have a healthy bowel movement which is a strong indicator that you are in healthiest condition. Farting or in proper term, flatulence is the expulsion through the rectum of a mixture of gasses that are byproducts of digestion in mammals and other animals. I feel that its our duty to be civil and mature about this.

Now excuse me, imma gonna go laugh at the word DUTY (pronounce: doodie)..xD...meanwhile visit my Facebook page for further news and update.

I can suddenly able to burst to a song. Like a silent volcano that stay dormant for years, I do have full potential that within moments, I can spew out tone deaf + wrong lyrics song. Unlike a volcano, I only erupt/sing when I'm in very good mood. Though I will not sing in public again due to one incident (no, not this one, this happen when I work part time, more on that later).

Hair

A friend of mine Pa'an kept his hair long because he like it. I love teasing him for it. Teasing him by mistaken him for a girl or threaten to cut his hair when he is asleep. Yazid also join in for the fun. I remembered one day, he snapped after too much teasing and said "shut up! you're not my mom!" xD

He also bragged that he is not scared of Pak Guard UIA that love to fine the students (okay, that's not fair, they're just doing their job). I saw with my own eyes, he folded when a Pak Guard UIA stopped him.

He was fined a lot of time because of his long hair. But he still insisting on keeping it.

Five Stages of Grief

The Kübler-Ross model, commonly known as The Five Stages of Grief, was first introduced by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book, On Death and Dying. Briefly, she interviewed 500 terminally ill patients to see their psychological changes and their way to cope with their death.

She describe that in 5 discrete stages, a process in which how people cope with death or the death of loved ones. She also notes that the events are not in chronological or complete since not everyone will go through these stages linearly. Some may stuck in one process, some may relive the process again and some might just skip to the end of the stages.

The stages popularly known by the acronym DABDA; Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance

Here's what my interpretation of the stages according to my experience when I fail Year 1 Block 1.

It's very normal for med students to fail their exam. Even many of my lecturers also failed at least once in their life. To my juniors, don't get too depressed about it. Always remember that failure is not an obstacle. Okay?

Yesterday I went to the Night Market and bumped into a childhood friend of mine. He ask me the taboo question (no, not that one, the one about exam). I ended up staring at him and he guess himself that it didn't went well.

Sleep Deprivation

Since today is Diwali, so I decided to stay up all night to revise my Year 1 Block 1 (Y1B1) notes...I ended up stayed up until morning...and no, I didn't even took a nap during my waking hours...Also, for another reason is I want to watch the Carling Cup 4th Round at 2.45 in the morning.

Moreover, I have this idea to post about the physiological changes in a sleep deprived person. I found out that there are a lot more than I listed down here but the one that I featured in this comic are the one that is found common in sleep deprived person.

Just now, Salman and his group organize a seminar about careers in medicine. Mostly, its about options for specialty and sub-specialty for future doctors and the means of getting a specialty..its was quite interesting. Interesting for seminars anyways...usually, they are all snore fest...especially mine..LOL!

so, i went around and ask my classmates for what kind of specialty that they have in mind and would love to do in their future

Cat Business

we have this fat cat (literally, the cat is FAT). she is about 5 -6 kg if I'm not mistaken. The thing is, she's always pissed off and scratching anyone that came close to her. But she is pleasant if she want some thing to eat. I guess cats took after human huh?

The best thing about her is that she is FLUFFY! and FAT too...hence the name GEMUK (lit. translation = FAT). Though at first I want to call her FLUFFY but since she is a bit of a jerk, I call her GEMUK instead.

so, the Liverpool vs. Man Utd ended with a draw. I guess that's okay considering MU poor midfield performance (to compare earlier in the season). But life goes on~

oh yeah, the myth debunked is here is that Med Students love to bring their notes/books/scribble or what have them along to everywhere they go...I thought that this is only apply to certain medical school, but apparently, every students does it...who knew huh?

I am also abide to this habit I'm afraid...especially when the exam is near and when I say near, its 25++ days to go and hell yeah, that is near and there is no time for procrastinating...time to get serious and start reading whenever I have free time!

So, during the Grand Match View last Saturday (15th Oct. 2011) I brought myself a few notes, and yes folks, I read them throughout the match...imagine one eye on the screen and the other on the notes...(@_@!)..though, we celebrated like crazy when Chicharito scored!! I accidentally threw my notes up in the air in that moment...its awesome to watch a match with members of the GGMU Kuantan!

Cadavers

a few weeks back the 1st year juniors have their first Anatomy practical..this means that they will be using a cadaver and revise their anatomy class..

seeing them cadavers for the first time make them excited as hell...to think back, I was also like them...

I still remember wearing latex glove and and face mask to avoid the smell of formaline....some of my classmate went extreme and bought goggle

though they only wear them for a few times..LOL

so, at first, i was curious as a cat...poking every part of the cadaver....with all the oohs and ahhs as I explore the human body even more

but after a while, its becoming less interesting and not to mention that the specimen (or cadaver) is ruined after years being kept and dissected...some of them lost their heart

I also handle the specimen with my bare hands, LIKE A BOSS

and now, i can't go through a practical session without craving for nasi goreng daging...dammit

Blood-o-logy

As a child, i'm very interested with blood. No, i'm not that freak who love blood and gore, but just fascinated with blood...

I could watch them for hours, see them clot by themselves...sometimes, i just...
i even thought that a red pen uses blood as ink back then..xD
Gross right? xD...ahh, childhood, it makes me feel less vain than I am today

but 10 years passes on, that "innocent" little boy became a man...well almost a man

he work his ass off and manage to get a place in IIUM Kuantan Campus Kulliyyah of Medicine

and sadly, his obsession with blood went away but not completely though

and of course yours truly learn Haematology as a part of his 2 year pre-clinical program..

The doctor who taught him Haematology is none other than Dr. Norlela

and yes folks, she always say that to her students...but sadly, I always forgot about them..
but heck, do I even remember what homework that my teacher gave to me back in school?
